According to the American Optometric Association, more than 600,000 eye injuries related to sports and recreation occur each year. 42,000 of these injuries are of a severity that requires Emergency Room attention, however more than 90% of those injuries can be prevented with the appropriate use of protective eyewear!

 

 

 

Certain sports are more prone to injury, especially those involving regular player-to-player contact.  Injuries can result from bodily impact, dust, gravel, and glare from snow or water.  Some of the sports most likely to cause injuries include:

  • Basketball

  • Racquetball
  • Paintball

Common Eye Injuries:

Outdoor athletes may also be subject to excessive ultraviolet radiation that can lead to tumors, keratitis, cataracts, and other conditions.
